WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE CILANTRO LIME CREMA

Cilantro lime crema is the ultimate fresh and tangy sauce that takes tacos, nachos, grilled meats, and veggies to the next level! This smooth, creamy blend of Greek yogurt, optional mayonnaise, fresh cilantro, lime juice, and spices adds the perfect balance of brightness and richness to any dish. Whether you’re drizzling it over crispy tacos or using it as a dip, this easy homemade sauce is a must-try. Let’s discuss what you’ll need to make it in a little bit more detail down below:
- Greek yogurt: Creates a smooth, tangy, and creamy base. Greek yogurt offers a slightly tangier flavour and a higher protein option. However, you can use sour cream instead, if your prefer.
- Mayonnaise (optional): Adds an extra level of richness and creaminess, but can be left out for a lighter version. Feeling adventurous? Check out my recipe for homemade mayonnaise!
- Cilantro: The star ingredient in this cilantro lime crema recipe! It brings a fresh, herby flavour that pairs beautifully with the lime. Therefore, fresh cilantro works best in this recipe.
- Lime Juice & Zest: Lime juice provides a bright, citrusy tang, while the zest intensifies the lime flavour for a deeper kick.
- Garlic (fresh or powdered): Adds a savory depth to balance the acidity of the lime and the freshness of the cilantro.
- Cumin: A warm, earthy spice that enhances the overall flavour with a subtle smokiness. Really takes this cilantro lime crema up a few notches. I wouldn’t skip it!
- Salt and Pepper: Essential for balancing and enhancing all the flavours in the crema.
- Water (as/if needed): Helps thin the crema to your desired consistency—great if you want a drizzle-friendly sauce!

HOW TO MAKE CILANTRO LIME CREMA (KEY TIPS)

You can find full instructions for how to make this restaurant style lime crema with cilantro in the recipe card down below, but here are a few quick tips to keep in mind:
- Use fresh ingredients. Fresh cilantro, lime juice, and garlic will give the best flavour and results. Avoid bottled lime juice, as it lacks the same brightness.
- Blend for smoothness. For a silky, restaurant-style crema, blend all the ingredients in a food processor or blender. If you prefer a chunkier texture, finely chop the cilantro and mix by hand.
- Adjust to taste. Start with the suggested amount of lime juice, garlic, and salt, then adjust to your preference. Add more lime for tang, cilantro for freshness, or a pinch more cumin for extra warmth.
- Don’t skip the cumin. It adds a subtle warmth that ties all the flavours together perfectly. Just trust me and toss it in!
- Thin it out (if needed). If the crema is too thick for drizzling, add a teaspoon of water or lime juice at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
- Let it rest. For the best flavour, let the crema sit in the fridge for at least 15–30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavours to meld beautifully and makes it extra flavourful.
- Store it right. Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3–4 days. Stir before using, as the ingredients may separate slightly over time.
- Don’t be afraid to customize it to suit your preferences! Want some heat? Add a pinch of cayenne, a chopped jalapeño, or a dash of hot sauce for a spicy twist!
