If you have a few pears lying around then you’re in luck because I can almost guarantee that you’ve already got the rest of the ingredients to make this simple Pear Dessert Sauce recipe lying around, too. Let’s discuss them in a little bit more detail down below:

  • Pears: Well, duh! You can’t make this delicious Pear Sauce without a few pears! They’re the bulk and base of the sauce and provide the perfect natural sweetness. For this recipe, I used D’Anjou pears. Ripe pears work best however any variety will do the trick just fine. Skin on or off totally depends on your preference. But I like to peel mine to ensure as smooth of a puree as possible.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances the flavours of the rest of the ingredients. A little vanilla goes a long way in this recipe.
  • Lemon Juice: Adds a bit of acidity to the Pear Sauce. Also acts as a preservative and helps keep this Pear Sauce fresh for longer. Therefore, freshly squeezed lemon juice works best in this recipe.
  • Water: Helps soften the pears as they cook and ensures they don’t stick to the bottom of the pot. It may not seem like a lot of water and that’s because it’s not. But all we need is a little something to get the pears going. And then they, too, will release some liquid as they boil down and cook in the pot on the stove.
  • Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger: Adds the perfect combination of flavours for this recipe for Pear Dessert Sauce. They’re responsible for the house smelling absolutely amazing as the sauce cooks up on the stove. The ground and dried versions work best in this recipe as opposed to fresh. You don’t have to use all 3 spices if you don’t want to or don’t have them on hand. Using only 1 or 2 will still give you a very flavourful sauce.

HOW TO MAKE PEAR SAUCE (KEY TIPS)

You can find full instructions for how to make this simple Pear Dessert Sauce in the recipe card down below, but here are a few quick tips to keep in mind for this recipe:

  • Use ripe pears. Although the pears will soften as they cook in the pot on the stove, this process will be easier and faster if the pears are ripe to begin with. Plus the pears reach their maximum sweetness when they’re ripe making them perfect to make this pear dessert sauce. EXTRA TIP: To check for ripeness, simply use your finger to press around the tops or necks of each pear. If they’re soft with a little give, the pears are ready to use.
  • Cut the pears into even sized chunks. Whether you leave the skin on or off is totally up to you! I like to peel them for a smoother sauce. But again, if you prefer to leave them on, you do you, boo! Even sized chunks will get them to cook up and soften in the same amount of time. Go for chunks that are on the smaller side as they will take less time to cook.
  • Stir the pears a few times throughout cooking. This not only helps them cook evenly but also ensures they don’t burn or stick to the bottom of the pot. This is a very low maintenance sauce that doesn’t require too much attention but stirring every now and then is key to a delicious tasting pear sauce that doesn’t taste scorched or burnt.
  • Use an immersion blender, regular blender or food processor to puree the pears to your desired consistency. You can leave some pear chunks in it, if you’d like. Or you can puree them completely until no chunks remain and the entire sauce is smooth. EXTRA TIP: Make sure the sauce has cooled down before transferring it to a blender or food processor. If using an immersion blender, there is no need to let it cool and you can blend it directly in the pot.
  • Let the Pear Sauce cool down before storing. Although you can eat it when it’s hot or cold, wait for it to cool down completely before transferring it to a container to store.
