This Horseradish Sauce Recipe is quick and easy to make and packed full of flavour. It’s creamy, has the perfect punch and is great for slathering onto anything from tacos to burgers, to veggies and grilled meats.

I’m always looking for new and exciting sauce recipes. Dipping sauces, tomato sauces, sauces that’ll pair well with just about anything I eat. You know what I say? If it’s good, it’ll be that much better with sauce! Am I right?! I don’t remember the last time I had a slice of pizza, for example, and didn’t dip the WHOLE ENTIRE THING (that’s right… each and every single bite, not just the crust) into a creamy sauce. You better believe I like my chicken wings saucy AF, my sandwiches piled high with ALL OF THE SAUCES and my burgers with more than just ketchup, mustard and mayo. I am THE ONE at the table that must have both a hot AND creamy sauce, at all freaking times, even if it’s only to dip something as simple as a french fry into.

GIVE ME ALL OF THE SAUCE. ANY WAY. ANY KIND.

I have accidently made it my personal mission over the last few years to see if I can replicate all of my favourite sauces at home since I plain and simply can’t just do without. And well, SPOILER ALERT, I can! And it doesn’t stop there! Now I’m at the point where I can recreate or create any kind of sauce just by looking at the ingredients I have on hand. Now that’s a skill I should be writing on my resume 😉

So, here we are. With a few simple ingredients that jumped out of my fridge when it was sauce-making-for-brisket-taco time. In less than 5 minutes, I had a flavourful horseradish sauce that I knew would be good on more than just brisket tacos. Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Do we count salt and pepper as their own individual ingredients?! LOL. I’ve been doing this food blogging thing for how long now and I still don’t really know the answer to this! In any event, this recipe for horseradish sauce has 4 main ingredients plus the addition of salt and pepper. Or 6 total ingredients including salt and pepper. Whichever way you look at it, it’s super simple to make and comes together in under 5 minutes. Let’s discuss exactly what you’ll need in a little bit more detail down below:

  • Sour Cream: Its tangy flavour and creamy texture helps to mellow out the sharpness of the horseradish. You can use Greek yogurt, mayonnaise or a combination of either of these instead, if you prefer.
  • Prepared Horseradish: A root vegetable known for its strong, pungent flavour and aroma, horseradish is the true star of the show in this homemade sauce recipe. Prepared horseradish is simply grated horseradish root that has been preserved in vinegar. It adds a spicy kick and distinctive flavour to the sauce.
  • Dijon Mustard: Adds depth of flavour and a slight tanginess to the sauce. You can use a different kind of mustard instead, if you prefer. Whole grain mustard, honey mustard or spicy mustard all make great alternatives.
  • Lemon Juice: Provides acidity and brightness to the sauce. It helps to balance out the richness of the sour cream and adds a fresh, citrusy flavour.
  • Salt and Pepper: Common seasoning ingredients used to enhance the flavour of the sauce. Add them to taste, so you can adjust the amount based on your preference.

You can find full instructions for how to make this creamy horseradish sauce recipe in the recipe card down below, but here are a few quick tips to keep in mind:

  • Use fresh and good quality ingredients. Opt for fresh sour cream, prepared horseradish and lemon juice for the best flavour. Fresh ingredients will yield a tastier and more vibrant sauce. And trust me, with so few ingredients you’ll really be able to taste each one shining through.
  • Make sure you combine all of the ingredients super well before serving. You want all of the flavours to be evenly distributed throughout the sauce.
  • Adjust seasonings to taste. Taste the sauce as you go and adjust the seasoning accordingly. Some people prefer a stronger horseradish flavour, while others may prefer it milder. Adjust the amount of horseradish, mustard, lemon juice, salt and pepper to suit your taste preferences.
  • For the best flavour and texture, refrigerate the horseradish sauce for at least 30 minutes before serving. Chilling allows the flavours to meld together and gives the sauce a thicker consistency.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS HORSERADISH SAUCE CALLED IN FRANCE?

In France, people often refer to horseradish sauce as “sauce au raifort.” “Raifort” is the French word for horseradish, so “sauce au raifort” translates to “horseradish sauce.” It’s commonly used as a condiment in French cuisine, particularly served with meats like roast beef or grilled steak.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PREPARED HORSERADISH AND CREAMY HORSERADISH?

The main difference between prepared horseradish and creamy horseradish lies in their texture and consistency, as well as how they are processed.

Prepared Horseradish: Prepared horseradish refers to grated horseradish root that has been preserved in vinegar. It typically has a coarse texture and a sharp, pungent flavour. You can use prepared horseradish as a condiment or seasoning to add heat and flavour to dishes such as roast beef, seafood or sauces.

Creamy Horseradish: Creamy horseradish, on the other hand, is made by mixing prepared horseradish with a creamy base, such as sour cream or mayonnaise. This results in a smoother texture and a milder flavour compared to straight prepared horseradish. You can use creamy horseradish as a dipping sauce or spread, particularly with meats like roast beef or sandwiches.

WHAT DOES HORSERADISH SAUCE GO WITH?

Horseradish sauce adds a spicy, tangy and flavourful element to a wide range of dishes, making it a versatile condiment that can elevate all of your favourite meals. Here are some of my personal favourite ways to use it: on brisket, roast beef, steak, prime rib, grilled or slow roasted pork, seafood such as smoked salmon, shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, salmon cakes or fish dishes, on sandwiches, burgers, wraps or tacos, alongside roasted or mashed potatoes or as a dip to raw or roasted vegetables.

HOW LONG DOES HOMEMADE HORSERADISH SAUCE LAST?

If stored in an airtight container and kept in the fridge, homemade horseradish sauce can typically last for about 1 to 2 weeks. Is that your sign to make more than you think you need? Why yes, yes it is!
